5 Ways To Show Your Pet You Love Them

Who loves you more than your pet? This Love Your Pet Day, don’t forget to show your pets the same love they show you every day.

But how? You already know chocolate is a no go, and your pets can’t read e-cards and don’t appreciate a bouquet of flowers.

Here’s the good news. There are lots of ways to show your pets how much you love them that they will appreciate. Here are five ways you can show your pet how much you love them on Love Your Pet Day and every day.

1.) Give them healthy food (but not too much food)

Just like humans, pets do well when they have a healthy diet. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of misinformation on what we should feed our pets. One helpful source of information is the American College of Veterinary Nutrition  for some basic guidelines about what to feed your pet. Always check with your vet before making any changes to your pet’s diet.

2.) Take your pet for regular veterinary checkups

Not many of us like visiting the doctor, and our furry friends are no different. But you can show your pets to at least tolerate going to the vet by giving them treats each time to make the experience a little more enjoyable for them. It's important to take your dog or cat to the vet regularly to make sure they're getting the care and attention they need.

3.) Make sure they have proper identification and are microchipped

It sometimes happens that our pets wander a little too far for their own good. One great way to increase the chances of being reunited with our furry friends that have run away or gotten lost or stolen is to have them microchipped.

While microchipping can't guarantee your pet will be found or returned back to you, microchipping pets is an extra safeguard that pet parents often choose. One of the very first things a shelter or rescue will do when a pet is brought to them is to check whether the dog or cat is microchipped.

Studies show that microchipping greatly increases the chances a pet parent will be identified.  A study from 2009 courtesy of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association showed that at least 70% of found dogs and  63% of cats turned in to shelters were reunited with their owners.

4.) Play together

Some pets require lots of attention while others may look for more alone time. However, most pets are happy just to be by your side. Show your pet how much they mean to you by taking a break from your phone and spending quality time together in the form of play time.

Playing games provides your furry friends with mental and physical benefits. To keep your pet from getting bored, find a few activities, like hide-and-seek or fetch, that you enjoy playing with each other.

5.) Provide a safe, enriching, loving home

Take a few extra minutes to cuddle with your fur pal. Cuddling with pets has health benefits for both pets and humans. Petting your dog or cat can release hormones, reducing anxiety and stress, and can be very calming for both of you.

Give your dog or cat an extra treat now and then to reward them and let them know they are a good boy or girl. Give them a cozy place of their own to sleep. Be slow to anger, quick to forgive and finally, cherish every moment you have with your pets.
